Why Study Playwriting at the Playwright’s Lab at Hollins University?
We could tell you about our culture of collaboration, how we work hard to create a climate of possibility—but for playwrights, getting work done is what it is all about. In the last year our students have had over 103 productions, mounted 50 professional readings and published 16 plays. Many of our students get work in the field before graduation.
When we created the Playwright’s Lab, we envisioned something different from any other playwriting program in the world. Even among low residency programs we stand out. At Hollins you get an INTENSE and PERSONAL six-week summer session surrounded by top notch working professionals, challenging classroom study and lots of opportunities to get your work on its feet in front of live audiences. Our guest artists and visiting faculty read like a Who’s Who of new play development: Mark Bly, Gary Garrison, Todd London, Morgan Jenness, Ruth Margraff, Bonnie Metzgar, Bob Moss, Carl Hancock Rux, Tanya Saracho, Lucy Thurber, Naomi Wallace and Mac Wellman–just to name a few.
We’re currently developing certificate programs in directing and performing so that actors and directors will also call Hollins their artistic home.
If you are looking for a scrappy program that’s laser focused on your artistic goals and you passionately want to put into practice everything you learn in the classroom—then you’re the kind of playwright we’re looking for. Because at Hollins, we get work done.
The deadline for application is February 15, 2012, but if you need an extension we will be glad to work with you. You can find more information about the program, including complete bios of our guests and faculty at: www.hollins.edu/grad/playwriting/index.html.
